Removal of solid phase is one of the most important aspects of drilling fluid system control, because it is directly related to the improvement of drilling fluid efficiency and is also an important factor in reducing the total cost of drilling. Use one or more of the following techniques to remove the solid phase in the drilling fluid on site:
1. Screening technology: drilling fluid vibrating screen, strong water sensitive mud and shale removal device
2. Cyclone separation technology: Desander, desilter
3. Centrifugal separation technology: coarse mesh and sedimentation centrifuge
4. Gravity sedimentation technology: sedimentation tank, dehydration device
Usually, these technologies can be accomplished by using separate equipment. However, in some cases, these equipments are used in combination, such as a drilling fluid cleaner, which is to fix a hydrocyclone on a vibrating screen. Another important combination device is the drill cuttings dryer (also known as the drill cuttings dryer), which is a centrifuge equipped with a cone-shaped vibrating screen, which can be used to separate drill cuttings from non-aqueous drilling fluids, and remove the drilling fluid from the surface of the drill cuttings before processing the drill cuttings. In addition, some devices help to improve the efficiency of solid phase removal. For example, sometimes a vacuum or atmospheric degassing device (installed in front of the centrifuge, especially between the vibrating screen and the de-sanding device) is installed to remove the mixed drilling fluid that can cause the pump to evacuate and reduce the density of the drilling fluid, remove gas in the form of bubbles.
The solids control equipment used on the well site is mainly used to remove drill cuttings, but it cannot remove all the drill cuttings in the drilling fluid. Similarly, in order to remove drill cuttings with a particle size ranging from a few millimeters to a few microns from the drilling fluid, new equipment must be carefully developed to retain the desired solid phase (such as heavy materials). Although it is impossible to completely separate the desired solid phase from the undesired solid phase, the advantages presented by the solids control equipment far exceed its own limitations. Each equipment is designed to remove enough drill cuttings and the maximum particle size range of drill cuttings. The key to effective solid phase control is that the equipment environment is suitable, the equipment is installed correctly, and the equipment is operated properly.
