This condition can lead to the accumulation of high-pressure gas at the wellhead, posing a threat to drilling operations and the safety of personnel. In the past, the conditions of drilling operations were relatively difficult, and drilling equipment and safety equipment were limited, so a simple and economical equipment was needed to deal with this problem.
  
The poor boy degasser is a simple and relatively inexpensive gas separation device designed to separate harmful gases from gas-liquid mixtures. Its design is relatively simple, usually a vertical cylindrical container, which separates gas and liquid by the principle of gravity separation. The liquid part is returned to the drilling fluid system, while the gas part is discharged to a safe area through the ventilation pipe.

Since the poor boy degasser adopts a relatively simple principle and design, its function may be relatively limited, and it cannot completely handle the gas-liquid separation problem in all cases. However, it has played an important role in past drilling operations as it was a quick solution to sudden gas problems during drilling. Although the modern drilling industry uses more advanced gas separation equipment, the name "poor boy degasser" is still used to describe similar gas separation devices.
